Prints and Their Makers

2021 IFPDA (International Fine Print Dealers Association) Book Award, for excellence in research, scholarship, and the discussion of new ideas in the field of fine prints

Loving original art on a budget, Jan was keen to develop a book on the American printmaker, the behind-the-scene artists who work with artists. She found master printer Phil Sanders through his YouTube videos made for MOMA. Together, Jan and Phil developed the book’s contents, organizing the chapters by the seven major processes—relief, intaglio, lithography, monotype, screen print, photogravure, and chine collé—and a sweeping historical survey that featured from Albrecht Dürer to Mary Cassatt and such leading contemporary artists as William Kentridge, Julie Mehretu, Richard Serra, Will Cotton, Nicole Eisenman, Chakaia Booker, and Elizabeth Peyton. Phil was the book's expert and author; Jan offered editorial direction, counsel on publication rights, encouragement during the research and writing, and advocacy with the publisher.
