Gates of Harvard Yard

Blair Kamin, Pulitzer Prize winning Chicago Tribune architectural critic and Neiman Fellow, taught a January term at Harvard University, where Jan also happened to be doing research. Meeting over coffee, Blair shared his fascination with his students’ research on the twenty-five iconic portals enclosing Harvard Yard. There and then we created the idea of a gifty travel book to guide the millions of visitors to the Yard around these icons. Blair edited the student essays; photographer Ralph Lieberman created color images, illustrator Roger Erickson sketched each gate, and architect Christopher Beck mapped the historic portals. On a tight budget, Jan managed this multi-faceted team.
